Bean Counters by instinct think for the moment, not the future! and that is a huge problem.
There's an old saying in the airline world: hire till you furlough and furlough till you hire.
I believe they (AA) did keep some pilots on "zero time" lines where they had no scheduled flying so no pay, but could pick up trips from open time in lieu of being furloughed. But I think all the airlines severely underestimated how quickly people would return to flying and were caught unprepared, which I guess is better than the reverse.

Somewhat related, back during the Great Depression, railroads would keep as many personnel on their rolls by simply working them half-time instead of full time. Kept valuable working knowledge & experience available & o/h until business started picking up in the late 1930’s. Im sure workers didn’t like half pay instead of full pay, but those that were smart; knew it was better than being laid off & no pay coming in.

Staffing shortages. More like adverse events and deaths of pilots due to the jabs. The smart pilots will stear clear of them.
Don't ever get rid of your most valuable asset, flight crews! Maybe get rid of those who decided to furlough the pilots!
