No matter what you say about the pilot, airport policies, warning signage, etc - the sunbather was definitely a candidate for the Darwin Award. Had he lost his head, or whatever, he would have cinched that award !!

It seems to me the people of Santa Monica should have been aware of the potential for "crashes, noise and pollution" when they chose to live in that city. They could have chosen to go elsewhere. I live in Houston near IAH, where there is the same "problem." Nobody forced the nearby residents to move close to the airport. It's becoming ridiculous how some folks try to make their grievances the problems of other people. I propose we horsewhip these complainants in a public square! <grin> And, BTW, I have a soft spot in my heart for SMO - I learned to fly there some 40 years ago.

They need to be, at least, publicly spanked! I like the Singapore remedy for misbehavior, public caning. But that wouldn't FLY here. Too bad. When I was in Catholic High School[St Thomas, Houston] in the mid 1950s, the discipline was enforced with a steel rod 1cm x 1cm x 1m. We were told to bend over a table and remove wallets. Three to five swats were administered. I was a hard core case and a slow learner - it took me two such sessions to learn. But when I enrolled my own son in the same school, I asked if I needed to sign any permission form for corporal punishment. I was answered that corporal punishment was no longer done. When I reminded the principal that the school motto is “Teach me Goodness, DISCIPLINE and Knowledge,” he said, wistfully, "those days, shamefully, are gone forever."

While it's always fascinating to know someone else's criteria, it's really only peculiar to, and important to, him. Still, I'm curious to see Part II. I'd like to know what in the world fits EVERYTHING on his list ! It might not be TOO bad a craft.

Wow ! I hope the Ryanair people never listen to Jay Leno, with all his humorous (?) remarks about drunken pilots, and other negative comments related to aviation. The airlines he mentions usually just grin and bear it - and the storm usually blows over fairly quickly. Ryanair's "interventions" just guaranteed that this situation will not blow over all that quickly. Defamation is something done with malign intent. Without that intent, all the blathering should be simply ignored.

Have any of these interceptions actually saved anyone or anything from a genuine terrorist? Or are they just to give the Air Force boys some practice? And get the Homeland Security folks some publicity? The gov't needs to come up with a foolproof way to get the information to pilots before their flights. How? I don't know - but where there's a will, there's a way. I know I'm getting forgetful as I get older, and sometimes don't check, but this kind stuff subjects me to a fine, possible jail time, and loss of ticket. I try to stay away from politicos whether or not there any restrictions, but I'm afraid I'll slip up someday . . .
