Cirrus SR22 Parachute Deployment Caused by Intentional Spin Demonstration

Submitted
It has been revealed that the May 10, 2014 incident occurred when an "over-confident" salesman intentionally put a Cirrus SR22 into an aggravated stall before he lost control of the airplane and had to pull the parachute handle. The salesman, also a flight instructor, routinely flew a similar flight profile to demonstrate the safeguards built into the aircraft to prevent an out-of-control spin. The salesman has since promised never to try those maneuvers again. (www.avweb.com) More...

How do you know something will go wrong? When someone says, "Hey! Watch this!" :D
outward
Absolutely. Probably famous last words by more people than history knows about.

a very common "Human factors of flight" type question on the PPL exam.

It is entirely possible that after engaging in this maneuver umpteen times without incident this was the first time he had performed it with a back seat passenger. Aft CG issue? Makes stall/spin recovery a different animal- especially aggravated if the back seat passenger is 'hefty'. Note too, that yes you can spin a 172, but only with chutes and nobody in the back seat- Utility Category rules.

Does Cirrus have a 'you break it, you buy it' policy?

"Watch This" should be the last thing this Salesman/Flight instructor ever says while sitting in either the right or left seat.

I can't believe he will still have a job. They probably haven't heard the last of the "prospect". Lol. I'm also surprised the prospects didn't kick his ass.

.....Then, the salesman said: 'Watch this.'.....this macho idiot and his passengers are lucky to be alive.

I am just waiting for some to say the most stupid saying in aviation: "Any landing you can walk away from is a good one".

Yeah, right, tell that to the survivors of the Asiana 777 that crash landed at SFO last year.
outward
In this case, it wasn't a landing, just a survivable and controlled crash so yes, that would be a reeeeally stupid thing to say.

Hey, he landed on the ground, he walked away, lived to do something stupid another day.

The reason the cirrus has a parachute is because it would not pass the spin test for certification.

having that parachute on board can make you a bit over confident , good thing he had it , other wise the news would have been a little different !

One reason why I will be buying the new Cessna Skylane JT-A vs a Cirrus.
