What Happened To The Boeing 747s That Flew The Space Shuttle?

With its unique design, the Boeing 747 is an aesthetically-striking aircraft in its own right. However, two of these iconic double-decker quadjets became perhaps even more conspicuous following the end of their passenger services. Long ago and far away we were on the downwind for runway 4 at ELP in a DA20 when the controller advised, I'll call your base and if you look off to your right for your traffic you'll see something you don't see very often. It was a 74 with a shuttle on top stopping for fuel.

Yes, it was Big, and seemed to be going so slow.
