Nice shot, and you've captured a 'rare one' here.

Ryan ST-3KR's (PT-22's) normally use Kinner radial engines, while the earlier ST-A variants used an in-line Menasco. I've never seen a Ryan with a Fairchild (Ranger) engine.

My first & only flight in an open cockpit airplane was in a Kinner powered PT-22. It was at Poly Royal in the early 60's when I was an Aero Engineering student at Cal Poly SLO. The pilot was "Curley" Hemingway. Back then Cal Poly had a 2,400 foot turf runway. What an experience! Somewhere in my "stuff" is an 8 mm film I took during the flight.
