Everything is speculation right now, but it sounds like he might have attempted the impossible turn at just 200' AGL.

5 people plus unknown amount of fuel, the aircraft has to be heavy. Probably a losing situation either way but you don't attempt a turn with that altitude and less than 30 seconds to land.

LeGros Memorial Airport is a rural airport surrounded by agriculture fields. Plenty of areas for an emergency put down.
