Submitted
Virgin Australia has rolled out its new fare structure that features reduced benefits for some of its elite frequent flyers and the re-introduction of seat-only options for flights to Bali and the South Pacific. The airline has rebranded its fares with names such as Go, Go Plus, Getaway, Elevate, and Freedom, each of which have different levels of flexibility and inclusions. There are also new fare categories for premium economy and business class tickets. (australianaviation.com.au) More...

I can remember when they started up with Just three Boeing 737-700's at BNE after the collapse of Ansett Australia. $1 airfares everywhere to any destination in Australia Qantas went into a state of shock with there high airfares ripping off the public. A week later Qantas drop there airfares to try and match Virgin Blue as it was known then. But it failed. Good on you Virgin Australia you certainly have shaken the domestic market up here in Australia

Virgin Blue started in 2000 to take advantage of people visiting Australia for the Sydney Olympics. Ansett's collapse in 2001 (just a couple of days after 9/11) meant that overnight the fledgling Virgin Blue became Australia's second largest airline.

Within months they inherited the terminal spaces once occupied by Ansett, which was a massive improvement from the previous terminal offerings in cities like Melbourne and Sydney. They were also able to take advantage of the global airline industry downturn following 9/11 by ordering much needed new planes at rock-bottom prices.
