My condolences to the family.
I am shocked that passengers, let alone children, are allowed in those largely unsupervised conveyor alley's.
These are large, powerful, dangerous machines. We don't let passengers operate the loaders, jetways, or even the aircraft door. So why is baggage return self-service?
I prefer a service like Disneyworld where you walk off the plane to your local transportation and your bag finds its way to your hotel room by itself. Asiana had a service that delivered bags to home or hotel, saving me schlepping them in small cabs while I go to work.
There are several ways to reunite passengers with their bags without having them near the conveyor. Having ground personnel match tags could make sure more people wind up with the correct bag.
