Lockheed C-5 Galaxy (86-0013)
86-0013 (cn 500-0099) Freighter flashback Friday.. This was my first sighting of the very first Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy at the beginning of the C-5 Reliability Enhancement and Re-Engining Program (RERP). On the afternoon of 22 Sep 2006, I watched it takeoff, circle around, and immediately return but didn’t have my camera. It experienced hot-brakes after it landed on RWY 11 and several blasts could be heard as multiple tires exploded from the increased heat/pressure. Luckily, I was able to grab my camera and while not the sharpest, I snapped these long-distance shots. Lockheed Firefighters and aircraft maintenance crews quickly took control of the situation. If you look closely, you can see the left-front main bogie is raised. 86-0013 was originally delivered in 1987 as a C-5B, converted to C-5M and later delivered to Dover AFB. It is still assigned to Dover AFB DE where the 436th AW & 512th AW are collocated.
