Brian - there were four or five of the Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon surplus aircraft broadcasting a granular fire ant poison bait over my home town circa 1968... along with a lone Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. All of these were equipped with aerial application equipment and were parked at our local airport, GLH, while doing engaged in this work. As I recall the company that owned them had a contract with the state I resided in and eventually dispersed said fire ant bait over large areas. There was little long term lasting outcome. However, it was quite interesting to say the least to view them flying overhead at very low altitude!!!
