Loud Bang Causes Qantas Pilot to Shut Down Engine; Return to Airport.

Approximately 10 minutes after takeoff, the pilot of Qantas flight QF2, manually shut down one of the engines aboard the 747-400, after hearing a loud bang and excessive shuddering coming from one of the engines. The flight, on route from Bankok to Sydney, has safely returned to the airport and is being worked on by engineers. There were 356 passengers on board, and is expected to be delayed 24 hours. SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Rescue firefighters responded to a Southwest Airlines flight in distress after two tires blew on the runway Tuesday evening, leaving the jet and its passengers grounded. BRUSSELS: Travellers could see a new charge on their tickets to fly between Europe and North America after the European Union begins forcing airlines to buy carbon emission permits next year. The EU admitted on Monday, as it unveiled rules governing the system, that the scheme could prompt airlines to add between four and 24 euros ($32) to the price of a two-way transatlantic flight.
