Loud Bang Causes Qantas Pilot to Shut Down Engine; Return to Airport.

Approximately 10 minutes after takeoff, the pilot of Qantas flight QF2, manually shut down one of the engines aboard the 747-400, after hearing a loud bang and excessive shuddering coming from one of the engines. Southwest flight makes emergency landing at Sacramento International

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Rescue firefighters responded to a Southwest Airlines flight in distress after two tires blew on the runway Tuesday evening, leaving the jet and its passengers grounded. The left main tires blew at about 6:15 p.m. as Southwest flight 2287 was departing for Seattle, Sacramento International Airport spokeswoman Laurie Slothower said. Higher airline prices loom under EU emissions scheme

BRUSSELS: Travellers could see a new charge on their tickets to fly between Europe and North America after the European Union begins forcing airlines to buy carbon emission permits next year.
