Interesting to find the the solution why on 787 and not other planes... and only in China... What about other 787's from other countries flying into China? Quite a few unanswered questions?

As I write this, FlightAware tells me there are 364 B787s of all types in the air. If this GPS situation is a problem with Boeing, how is that possible? It seems more likely that some tech department(s) in China didn't pay attention to their memos.

“What’s the problem?

Despite being almost two decades into the new millennium, this weekend saw a mini ‘Y2K’ event affecting GPS systems worldwide. The devices were set to rollover from week 1024 to week 1, which, according to manufacturers, could have led to a problem.”

Last time I checked China doesn’t make the software on 787s nor GPS systems were developed in China, your comment is based on pure fabric.

indy, you beat me to it, and, might I add, most of the accidents in recent years occurred with operators based in third world countries and 90% (swag) of accidents and incidents occur with operators not based in the aircraft manufactures home country or with their flag carriers. To include AB. And, with MH, everything "is a problem with Boeing".

“The term ‘Third World’ arose during the Cold War to define countries that remained non-aligned with either NATO or the Communist Bloc. ”

So, sorry to disappoint you but China is actually a second world country. And some developed countries like Sweden and Switzerland are actually “Third World”.

That said there is no official world rankings anyway, so the First, Second, and Third are very arbitrary.
Now if you put use “poorer country” that still won’t work, remember Easy jet? A poor airline in a rich country won’t be much safer than a rich airline in a poor country. E.g. Air China (yes China is still really poor... by average GDP per capitica)

Since this article is about China grounding planes and not crashing, I should also talk a bit on Chinese Aiation Safety...

As for aviation safety, China’s system is somewhat independent from EU and FAA and it is stricter than US system. When was the last time you heard a major Chinese airlines had an incident? Funny the Taiwanese (“First World”, mind you) had many very publicized accidents due to pilot error or shoddy maintenance... Many from their flag carrier (China Airlines).

I guess you don’t know in China killing a person in car accident is enough to land you in jail for 5 years... now imagine killing 100 in an airplane crash due to negligence...

Could you point out where I indicated that china is a third world country in my post, because down voted Indy didn't state that and I simply agreed with his assessment and expounded from there. The last part of the long sentence after "and" included china, "reading and comprehension skills necessary" and I thank you and matt j for the judgement of my mental skills and the usual middle finger down vote that now seems to accompany any disagreement with a post, factually supported or not.

Ignorance is always an excuse. China was thriving around the time when neanderthals were roaming. https://www.ancient.eu/timeline/china/

This was merely a reset from 1999

And China will be here, long after the rest of the world has gone bye-bye
