They were running this live on the news... Even had a helicopter circling the airport... Give me a break... This is not news, and only serves to scare the flying public... No one died, very little damage to the plane. Replace the gear doors, maybe some minor structural damage to the nose area... Will probably be flying in a week.

LOL, by looking closer, this is nothing more than a gear disagree.... I have personally worked 5 of them in less than a year... None of them made the news, and none were towed off the runway. Bad flight crew.

I've had about 10 of them over the years, 3 within the past year between the 35 and 55, absolutely a non issue.

Landed safely at Lambert with gear down.

What was the big deal....
delmonaco03
Apparently they reported the front landing gear not going down but then it landed with gear down. The news footage was of a US Air Force jet doing low level passes with it's gear down and then retracting, little did they know they had the wrong plane. I don't know what the deal was, it was rather odd to have a news helicopter circling, but I guess sex and possible death are big sellers in the media.

Yeah... the media likes death and destruction... glad they did not get what they wanted... Wonder what the real problem was???

If FAUX news is reporting you just gotta know its totally tongue in cheek like all FAUX news reports are!

seems to be an issue with LR-Jets, I know of several -25's and -35's with the same issue

There was a female pilot that landed at our airport a few years ago flying a 35 or 45; she said every-time they landed that jet the Hydraulic warning light came on...Like you said; it must be a LR-jet thing.

Normal system pressure is 1500psi in the Lr60 which uses pretty much all the same systems as the 30series. The hyd pressure low lights come on at 150 psi....that's a HUGH drop from normal and if it was happening on every flight she's a moron for not getting it corrected...or she's full of it.

All I know is that she said that MX had looked at it and deemed it safe....other than that that is all I know.....however from my knowledge of dealing with truck drivers "all the time" doesn't always mean "all the time"

The Lear is a solid airplane, especially the 35. The majority of bad things that happen to it are due to piss poor maintenance and clueless pilots. Payne Stewarts airplane was an excellent one when it was based in MMU. The dept. shut down and it was sold to the FL operator where it went downhill.
Like Sabreliners, they are solid!

I wonder how it landed in Illinois when the article says it landed at Lambert Airport which is in Missouri? Must have been tricky getting it across the Mississippi River.

River's narrow and shallow there...

An official at a southern Illinois airport says an inbound Learjet with eight people aboard has landing gear trouble and is preparing for an emergency landing.

Diane Earhart of St. Louis Downtown Airport in Cahokia said Monday afternoon that air traffic control has confirmed the aircraft's landing gear is not functioning correctly. She says the pilot is circling the airport to determine when and how to land.

Fire trucks, ambulances and emergency crews can be seen on the airport tarmac. St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency's 911 Director Herb Simmons says they have fire and emergency responders at the Cahokia airport on standby. He says responders are waiting to see if the flight lands in Cahokia or goes to St. Louis, Mo.

Does anyone else see any anomolies with the reporting and facts surrounding this event or have I been watching too many X-Files reruns on late night t.v.? First you have the live footage of a C21 doing low passes and its represented as a LR45 with gear problems. Then its a LR45 and the tail number is N418MN....so ok they made a mistake. I watch the footage of it landing and see the tail number is not even close, something like N440FX. What gives here?

It was indeed N418MN, I have pictures of it in our hangar out at STL. I was out there a few days later again after the incident and saw another LJ with N###FX at the end of the tail...can't remember the full tail. This aircraft was located on the Signature FBO ramp, which is where N418MN was at and stored for MX, so the news probably got confused.

Initially when I was watching it on TV a news anchor said "and this is the aircraft" and they showed a Frontier A320 on approach...

Lear 25's last came off the line 28 years ago, and the Lear 35's 16 years ago and in no way can be compared to the currently produced Learjet 45's.

As for the landing, the aircraft was landing in East St. Louis Illinois, and diverted to St. Louis Missouri.

Issue was with the nose gear, which even without, the Lear would have had no problem landing the aircraft - a main gear would have been far more interesting.

I think the 35's ended more like 20 years ago. You're right about not comparing them to the 45. Learjets are 20 and 30 series, other models are just airplanes...

the landing gear has not changed since the -24. I have over 5000 hours in LR-Jets. I have never had this problem but I can tell you it's an issue that they will need to address someday as it is happening more and more often as the fleet ages

Didn't know the 20-30 series had trailing link lol. Must have missed that STC.

As I have been taught in the 35, 45, Kingair, Dash 8,and CRJ you never TURN off the runway with a gear unsafe light.

Not quite sure how I have made it through my not exactly short career, having never heard that little pearl, Eric, but it is a very sound policy. Know of an incident at ADS. in which a KA 200 landed with no L. main light. Taxied off the runway and parked the aircraft 90 degrees to a stiff and gusty N wind. The Maint. guys came out to put a collar on the actuator, without a jack under the L. wing, and the gear collapsed with the mechanic in the gear well. It killed an acquaintance of mine.

One pic. had the flaps down and the spoilers up with everyone out of the airplane, wonder what the deal was with that. Evidently not a hydraulic issue, wonder if it was just a light or a burnt out pilot...

A little late for this party, but my 2 cents worth. Clearly the strut is collapsed, thus no nose wheel centering on gear extension. This will allow the wheel to come out cocked to one side or the other. On a 20 0r 30 series Lear if the gear down locks are not all made, the landing lights will not work. I bet it applies to a 40, but not sure. So if an indication problem arises, turn on a landing light and watch the ammeter for current draw. If you get it, you got em. Can't straighten the nose wheel with steering as it does not work until main wheel spin up. The moral of the story, Know thy systems!

bentwing60 1
Correction, no nose wheel steering until squat switches are made.

The nose wheel being turned to one side in flight can be caused by the nose strut not having enough N2 pressure to force the lower strut to fully extend. The strut has a centering cam which will force the lower strut to straighten in flight but will move up once it has weight on the strut and the centering cam is moved up out of its notch. One of our C-21 pilots landed with a leaking nose strut that was not straight. He held the nose wheel off the ground as long as as he could and engaged nose wheel stearing to straighten out the nose wheel before letting it down. In the video the nose looks pretty low like the nose strut collapsed.

Strut service (not on H2 but 5606 Hyd Fluid) is very important to proper gear extension and retraction... This can cause a world of problems. You can have enough Nitrogen, but not enough fluid can cause the same problem. This is a more prominent problem in colder weather than warmer, and it was cold that day.
THRUSTT
THRUSTT 1
I had a nose strut seal blow on a 55 on take off, it couldn't retract due to not centering.
Kept the nose off until very slow on landing. Just was slightly nose low because of the bottomed out strut.
The Gov. of NE was on board, he continued by car because of that and Wellstone crashing just prior to me landing...

There's an extra tax for landing in ILL now....under these conditions as well.
Its' the Obama exercise tax....

Can anyone explain the strange reporting, lack of accurate information and incorrect aircraft types and tail numbers surrounding this event? First, it was a LR45 and CNN showed continuous footage of a C21 doing low passes indicating this was the plane and it clearly was not. This was followed by confusion about just which plane was in trouble. But, all X-Files stuff aside did anyone notice the tail number of the plane landing vs the plane reported. I heard N418MN and the plane in the footage looks to be N440FX. Pretty odd stuff going on....what is in that plane? *insert scary music here*
