This is a good move. Most runs by US carriers either drop you off or have a layover in YSSY or YBBN. When I flew on UAL841 in the 90s, its route went from KORD-KLAX-NZAA-YMML, so there never was a nonstop route from Melbourne to Los Angeles. This bridges that gap and connects service to another city in Australia to the US.
