So much is wrong with this story:

"starting its roll down the runway"

OK which was it ? Taxi or takeoff roll ? I find it hard to belive that if the A/C was rolling and " was about to take off" and this goof popped the hatch and the slide deployed, he would have most likely experienced some serious runway rash.
