Cessna 172 Loses Power on Departure Lands on Road

Submitted
Five days after getting your license you find yourself faced with a life or death situation. I think this pilot showed how to stay calm and fly the plane to the ground. No scratches to them or the plane that is how you take care of an emergency. (www.kjrh.com) More...

Well done, even flying as a passenger on airlines, I'm always looking for emergency
options. Well done, get back in the air as soon as you can!

I have around 10 hours in this C172. N97459. Nice job to the pilot.

I think I have some time in this plane, too. Christiansen sub-leased it to an outfit at Norman Westheimer called Fletcher Aviation back in the ~2004-ish timeframe.

Yep, it was purely instinct. Do you fly at Christiansen?

I used to Tanner, you were the passenger - correct? I used to be @ TCC for Air Traffic Control. Mainly flew over at RJC in N370JA and N724PG

To either one of you guys: Do you remember what year they took out Tulsa Dragway. It was notorious enough that it was listed in an Airmen's warning for one of the runways and I can't even remember which one. I only got the opportunity to see it once and only then as a pax, never as a pilot. pre 911 when cockpit doors stayed open most of the time, around 1968 or 9, I was a pax coming in from SAT on Braniff to FSM and they had moved me into 1st class. Broken IMC and just about the middle of our base, clouds broke and out there it was; you couldn't see anything else. Pilot kept swinging around and out broke the runway. I have been back up there in recent years and hadn't even thought about it til right now. Flight bag and tablet is at office in FSM to stay updated so I can't look to see. Hell, it may still be there but I didn't think so.

The Tulsa Raceway is still there, just east of the airport and roughly aligned with 8-26.

The remarks for TUL still includes comments on the track, too:

I see it sitting out there now. I was thinkin' it ran more like a 90 off that runway. Oh well; we age, and memory fades. Tks

The commonly used nickname for Lease-a-Plane was "Rent-a-Wreck" and "Lease-a-Piece". I'd rent aircraft elsewhere.

370JA is stil at RJC trust it more then the planes at LAP

Without a doubt. I love 370JA, she always climbed better, cruised faster, and was more reliable than any 172 I rented. She's probably getting on up there in hours now though.

Yea starting to a little bit doesn't get flown much though but one of the best for sure.

Yes, I was. I work at Christiansen so that's why I ask.

Any landing that you walk away from is a good landing

As a product of Oklahoma public schools, I have to chuckle at the references to "hay bails" and "after math."

Much better reporting from KOTV than KJRH, IMHO. Thanks for posting.
