The next Air Force One could be red, white and blue

Submitted
Washington (CNN)The next Air Force One will likely be red, white and blue — but don't expect any eagles painted on the side of the presidential aircraft. An official familiar with the project says President Donald Trump is deeply involved in the conversation about a redesign of the aircraft, but no decisions have been reached. (www.cnn.com) More...

Unfortunate to see politics brought into this based on an Internet story/rumor that doesn't contain a single named source, quote, or hard fact and only speculated it "could be redrawn".

Even though the source not named I can believe it - it has a ring of truth - for instance they said Trump also wants better beds which I can understand - AF1 just has single beds in the nose whereas Trump Force One had a full Queen size bed in the back

What it has is a ring of confirmation bias and the now standard/accepted practice of using unnamed sources in even trivial stories (and, ultimately, the paint scheme on any aircraft is mostly trivial) should be alarming no matter what one's political, social, or religious beliefs.
SpaceRanger
You've obviously not worked in the news-gathering industry. As a former newspaper editor I can assure you that many sources do not want their names published for fear of retribution and that an unnamed source is not automatically an unreliable source.

Actually, I've worked in the "news-gathering industry" on local, state, national and international levels and covered everything from small town planning boards to conflict. Any story without a single named source, without a single bit of concrete fact that can be verified should be suspect and the potential bias of the reporter or news organization taken into account. That standard is true no matter what side of an issue you're on and it's why there's a crisis in media today.
SpaceRanger
As an editor, I always made sure that any source, whether named or not, was a credible one. The only reason there is a "crisis in media" today is that our current president has the practice of labeling any story that does not glorify him and his perceived achievements as "fake news", even when he lies about his own previous statements. It's the same technique used to advantage by the Nazis.

We're discussing what is no more than a clickbait non-story here but once you bring Nazis into the argument, you've lost the plot.

And the Nazis did not invent the 'big lie' technique They picked it up from Woodrow Wilson, the man who 'kept us out of war'.
SpaceRanger
Well, he did until the Zimmerman telegram was made known.

Well, they were only offering Mexico Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. I suppose the 1917 Americans felt about it what Ukraine is feeling vis-a-vis Crimea. I know, this comment is going off subject.
SpaceRanger
I agree it's a trivial story, but it was you who brought up the so-called media crisis and confirmation bias.

LOL! Personal animosity always has a way of thrusting ones' true colors front and center!
SpaceRanger
An unnamed source does not meant the story is false or just a rumor. The source undoubtedly does not want his/her name known, and I can understand that.

The constant stream of unnamed sources (on stories often later found to be false or grossly inaccurate) plays right into the notion of confirmation bias.

It's being reported on Fox News. Therefore, being fair and balanced it must be true, /s

You realize both the CNN and Fox "stories" reference an Axios piece that contains no named source or hard information confirming anything? There's no reporting involved, it's all clickbait.
joelwiley

Certainly. Please note that the '/s' at the end, is the FA recommended alternative to the nonfunctional 'sarcasm font'.

I’m surprised he didn’t want it all “gold”,

Gold foil on the entire fuselage. On the tail is a large 'T' rising out of a crown.
The lettering will be in Cyrillic.

Ain’t that the truth. But unfortunately I don’t think all the good in the world would be able to satisfy him.

"The President requested the planes be ready 2021, at the beginning of his second term -- three years sooner than the original plan of 2024."

Quite comfident he is.

Just don't paint them until the result of the election is known.

My questions is how far are they into the production. I am sure there already built planes but they take a lot of modifications. Can they even be done by 2021?? And who’s to say he will have a second term???

The Air Force acquired two 747-8I aircraft that were originally ordered by Russian airline Transaero, which went bankrupt and never took delivery. They are being retrofitted to serve as presidential aircraft.
williambaker08
william baker 1
That’s what I was thinking I didn’t know how far they got into the retrofit yet or if they were even moved to be retrofitted as if today.

Incredibly stupid move by the tasteless Trump if he follows through. The current livery is iconic and timeless - I can't see how it can be improved upon. First Lady Jackie Kennedy oversaw the design of the current livery. Working with Raymond Lowey "the Father of Industrial design" she selected a scheme that has lasted over fifty years. It is because of this impressive Livery that Air Force One represents the United States wherever it lands in the world - in fact it becomes the United States.
SpaceRanger
But Trump doesn't represent the United States; he only represents himself and his "brand."

This coming from a guy that bought a used 757 (yes he did a nice job on inside), but the 757 is a old out of date plane and gas guzzling engines etc. He thinks it is best thing in the world...he knows nothing about planes...
kevinkeswick

Trump Force One - N757AF was purchased by Trump from Paul Allen (co-founder of Microsoft). Paul Allen bought the jet in 1995 when it was just a few years old (built in 1991) so the jet probably has relatively low airtime and a good fit for Trump who probably did not utilize it that much (except during the campaign). This isn't just any old "used jet" - this is a jet that has been pampered most of its 27 year life.

There's also the Citation X and the Sikorsky's.
bigkahuna400

Maybe pampered, but not fuel efficient at all. Would be ok if engines upgrades were available, but they are not as well
kevinkeswick
Kevin Keswick 1
Not the most fuel efficient but the 757 is still in use with major airlines today so can't be all that bad and I doubt Trump cares about the incidental extra cost for fuel.

Understood. I think all but gone form all US airlines, but lots overseas absolutely.

Actually almost exclusively US airlines - take a look at this list, United, Delta, American, Fed-Ex https://flightaware.com/live/aircrafttype/B752

Can he do this or is congressional approval needed?
SpaceRanger
I think Air Force approval is probably needed, as it will operate the aircraft, just as it operates the current Air Force One.

Time to write my Congressperson, oops, that won't do any good . . . Guess we'll HAVE to stand and put hand over heart every time it flys over . . .
