Can someone explain to this poor Canadian why the number '5' on Thunderbird 5 is applied upside-down?

When the Thunderbirds perform the "mirror" pass, the F-16 with the number 5 is upside down ... and the number "5" is then right side up.

To Mark Thomas, the main explanation I've heard is because Thunderbird 5 is the one that does the majority of the inverted flying, flying upside-down that is. Excellent shot Mark!
