What a really great shot of a classic stretched DC8 Super Sixty Series in the even more stunning CP Air livery. In 1971, one of these came close to disaster after landing at night into SYD (Kingsford Smith Airport). He had landed on Rwy 16. A Trans Australia Airlines Boeing 727(an early 100series)then commenced takeoff roll on the same runway. The CP crew thought that the tower controller had said to them "Backtrack if you like". But the actual instruction was "Take taxiway right"...(Different accents I guess!!!) As it was, the departing B721 spotted the DC8 taxiing northbound on the same runway, as they were up to around 100knots heading south. Too late to abort his T/O, the heavy Boeing rotated early. The top of the DC8's tail sliced into the belly of the 721, taking out most of his hydraulics. By a miracle, the TAA crew managed to land safely after dumping fuel. The DC8 lost about ten feet off of his fin and rudder and needed to spend a little longer on the ground in SYD than scheduled>>>
