Seems that the A350 sits much higher than the B787's. Why is that? I see it all the time with the A320 series compared tot he B737 series.

It is true. That is why it was easier for Airbus to put bigger engines on the 320 series over against the 737 which required alterations to the main gear on the MAX. Airbus just hung new engines on the aircraft and called it NEO

Good strategic planning by Airbus looking that far down the road.
I knew it wasn't the tail strike issue because the test pilots for one of the NEO's did a tail strike so the extra clearance wasn't too helpful that day.
