Boeing MD-11 (N601FE) - Fed Exs N601FE, named "Jim Riedmeye," is brilliantly illuminated by portable spotlights so holiday-season cargo can be unloaded after the MD-11 arrived at Reno from Memphis. In the background, two B757s (from left ... N780FD "Harvey" and N966FD "Kiana") have already been partially loaded with holiday mail destined for the east coast. All three FDX fleetbirds departed for Memphis a couple of hours after I clicked this shot from my position on Alpha taxiway.br /N601FE was one of three heavies to land back-to-back at RTIA. Two UPS bigbirds had touched down just prior to "Jim Riedmeyes" arrival; a Boeing 763 and an Airbus 306. All total, there were six cargo aircraft on the ramp when I was out there. I did not stay out very long; the temp was down in the teens so it was dang chilly, but I was out there long enough to get some excellent snaps.

N601FE was one of three heavies to land back-to-back at RTIA. Two UPS bigbirds had touched down just prior to "Jim Riedmeye's" arrival; a Boeing 763 and an Airbus 306. My next opportunity to take night shots of the busy activity on the cargo ramp will come in less than 16 hours. I will be back on the ramp by 3:30 AM tomorrow morning to capture pics of FDX, UPS, and SOO cargobirds. But there is another reason I'll be there ... at 8:30 PM tonight, Delta inaugurates direct ATL-RNO service with 757 equipment and I'll be out there to snap the 7 AM return trip departure back to Atlanta. Luckily for me, tonight's low temp is expected to be in the mid-twenties so it will be warmer than it was when I was out there to take the above photo.

This MD11 N601FE must have been retrofitted very recently with those upmarket winglets. I noticed that the adjacent parked 757s are totally "conventional" in the wingtip department...
