N110JY

The most bizarre, funky and weirdest plane you'll ever see. The YAK-110 is two YAK-55's put together to create the YAK 110. They also put a nice big jet engine down the middle.

The wonderful world of experimental aviation.

Do they ever use the jet engine, or is it just for looks? Surprised they didn't go with "255" rather than 110.

Alan, yes they did use the engine.

Thrust > drag !

With the jet at idle, and and the props near 100%, it was basically hovering in the vertical. I'd like to see the climb rate on this thing! This guy performed at the Hill AFB (UT) Airshow a couple weekends ago.

John, thank you for the link.

Weird indeed.

Another really weird design was the Nazi Blohm and Voss BV 141(it never made it into mass production). A reconnaissance aircraft with the cockpit on one wing - quite asymmetrical. Not sure how to post a picture - easy to Google up.

Hmmmm...why does this remind me of Red Green...and duct tape!?!

serge LOTH - Because they could... just to see if it would really fly... a “science project” as is said!!! :-)

North American did a similar thing to the Mustang 60 odd years ago.
