Back in the last century, our family flew on a Braniff 727 on Christmas Day. The safety briefing, read over the PA (no videos then) was a poem based on "Twas the Night Before Christmas." It covered everything required and every passenger listened to it instead doing something else. Applause followed.

This is a great idea for getting people to pay attention to these safety briefings if for no other reason than their entertainment value. Frequent travelers seldom listen up or pay any attention because they've heard the briefings so many times and think they know all they need to know. In actuality few know where their nearest exit is or how to operate it. Betty White is truly a golden girl.

Paul, you are so right. Not every aircraft is the same. Most people don't educate themseves as to a emergency evac. Maybe Betty White will make a difference! Asiana is one example. But the problem was that the Cabin Crew doesn't have the authority to iniciate an evacuation. Maybe. In their culture, it's a command from the the cockpit to evac. At UAL we had the authority to evac. 90 seconds were lost in the Asiana mishap...if they Cabin crew had the authority...many lives would have been saved. From the "Get Go" in training we were taught , the minute we got on the aircraft, that we were going to crash today. We would do our "Check List" and then we were more than ready to evac our passengers. The sad point is that most people are so complacent and they think it's not going to happen to them. Well... it happened to me and I went into my training mode. We evacuated on a DC-10...full boat and got those passengers out in less than 90 secs. I have a problem with SWA when they did a nose dive. The crew said...stay in your seats...we're not at the gate yet! Did they not know that they were in an emergency situation? Don't get it! United Training is probably the best in the world. And I am very proud to have served with the company for over 30 years!

LOL, Most people know it all already, If you don't believe me... Just ask them and most will tell you... This is great for those kind of people... because they will watch "I Love Lucy" and pay attention, but try to tell them something to help them straight out and they could care less.... Maybe some of these people will accidentally get the message.

Sparkie...exactly! It's most of the people who fly a lot and think they know everything! Well, they don't! And that is why this "Demo" is so informative. It may be humouous...which it is but do the pax take heed to it? I hope that they will get the message.

From your statement: "I hope that they will get the message." - There are some people who never will get the message!

I do like watching Betty White preform... She is one of the Old Time best...

You're right Sparkie...a lot of people won't get the importance of a safety demo. It really frustrates me because the people who don't educate themselves will make my odds of survival a hell of a lot less and they will impead the evacuation and might cause additional injuries or god forbid fatalities.

Let me ask you this: You were just involved with some sort of incident (like a gear collapse) and when the aircraft comes to a stop many PAX's start to get up , clog the aisles, open stow bins, and what ever else. Would you not tell them to sit back down and remind them that you are indeed, NOT at the gate? Atleast until the situation is assesed and a evac is THEN ordered? It is only MHO that you are being a bit too critical of that SWA cabin crew. But I would really like to hear your answer.

Sorry Jet...I would have gotten back sooner but had to watch football! Okay...the situation is abnormal...the cabin crew doesn't know if the cockpit is alive. We don't wait for a "Evac notification" because we were trained to get the hell out of a situation. If the fire is too hot...the smoke to thick...the water to high...or in this situation...the nose too low! Yes...I would assess conditions and get everybody out. The landing is not normal. Flight Attendants really do know the airplane and they know when a situation is good...and we can hold short of the evac or go for it. In most evacuations people like to take their belongings, which would most likely puncture the slide ....there goes there way out! The Crew doesn't know how the passengers are going to react to a situation. If I was on the SWA flight as a working Crew Member...my answer would be "Yes"! Evacuate. I didn't mean to be critical of the crew, I just couldn't understand that they didn't respond in a more safety oriented way.

LOL, no worries about the time, I am glad to have gotten the response and I appreciate your reply. I was just curious because you have commented in the same manner on different squacks on FA. I do not think that the crew was not aware of the urgency of the situation, I think they had a bunch passengers trying to "escape" before the situation was assesed and the safest evac route established and the "default" just rolled right off the tongue to re-establish some order and calmness for the time being. Is all just MHO as a wrench turner, but thanks again for the reply.

Jet...People are an odd bunch when they are in an unfamiliar situation and as a crew member...all you can do is do the best you can. The question is...how could the Cabin Crew Members not know they were in an emergency situation?! Don't get it! They hit hard and the nose was wiping itself on the runway. To me...that is a emergency situation...have to yell your commands and get the hell out of there. Have a great night Jet!

Jet...one more thing. That compacentcy rather than evacuation mode kills people. Like I said...fire....smoke and water! Evac saves lives...complacenty.doesn't.

Remind me please, where was the smoke and fire on the SWA nose gear collapse, I seem to have forgotten.

There were probably a lot of "Spark" on landing but what I'm trying to say is that you have an very abnormal landing...personally, I'm not going to sit around wondering if a fire is going to break out or smoke is going to fill the cabin. My immediate response would to assess and get everybody off the airplane.
JetMech24
JetMech24 1
And right into a fire you didn't know was there? All I am saying is that it isn't always a good idea to just bail out if you don't even know what you're jumping into and why panic if there is no reason to?

Dee Lowry 2
Jet, that's why the Flight Attendants assess conditions before they open the exit. As far as panic goes...From the video I've seen, there was a lot of panic onboard already and I feel the "nose dive" did warrant an evacuation. Don't open doors 1L and 1R, as that area was near the source of impact and I believe the "first responders" were foaming the obvious nose area. Redirect pax aft to the window exits and doors 2R and 2L. In most emergency situations, people need the directions from the cabin crew. That is what they are trained to do.

In case anyone has forgotten, on the SW flight the nose gear pushed up through an electronics box, and there was a smell of smoke in the passenger compartment. Had the impact created an electrical fire that was not suppressed, it would've burned up into the passenger compartment.

When fires do break out on aircraft, they often spread quickly. The smoke spreads even faster.

Dee's conservative approach is much smarter. Better to evaluate and evacuate an aircraft that has suffered bent metal, while you can get everyone out before the passenger compartment is filled with smoke and fire.

If there's some minor panic after a rough landing/ crash that pushes the nose gear up into the belly of the aircraft, there will be much more panic if you wait until passengers see visible flames inside of a plane filling with smoke.

In order to minimize evacuation injuries, you should evacuate earlier under better conditions. That's the point of having the evac protocols.

More often that not, listening to a flight crew member saves more lives than it cost.

Air New Zealand has found a way for people to actually pay attention to the safety dance. They have an all-blacks video plus a Hobbit video. Way more entertaining and eye catching than the regular demonstrations.

Didn't we have Betty White's Mew Zealand safety video squawked last week? How is this any newer info that the same exact video last week?

From 2004-2006, there was a budget airline called Independence Air. I flew several times, and each time, a new celebrity announced the safety briefing. My favorite was married couple James Carville and Mary Matalin, who would address the passengers on the "Left" and "Right" side of the aisle!

Here is one featuring Dennis Miller: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnUTh1kNYBY

Awesome videos! Nice touch having Betty White and Gavin Mc Leod as Air NZ spokepersons.
If this safety Video doesn't grab the passengers attention, nothing will!
Absolutely genius.
