Hong Kong Turns Airport Into Cruise Terminal

Submitted
For those that remember Kai Tak airport with its checker board approach. Since closure of Kai Tak it has been a golf driving range and container storage, but now reopening for cruise ships...approach and activity will not be as exciting for airport watchers on the Hong Kong side. Word on the streets is that the ships will have to approach the dock on a 90-degree angle

On the serious side, most of the current cruise liners have the directional thrusters underneath and that might not be near as exciting as landing at the old airport. On the other hand, that Aircraft carrier might have a problem.LOL

Yes sir. They're called bow/stern thrusters. I call them cheating, but that's only because my vessel doesnt have them...lol

They're on most twin-screw vessels it seems nowadays. There's a saying in the nautical world: Never approach a dock faster than you can afford to replace it. With these thrusters, you get a neat little joystick mounted at the helm. You pull up in the general vicinity of where you want to dock and then use the joystick to slide her into place.

Like I said, cheating.

I would say they have them, but I also remember seeing them on some Discovery Channel show being pushed out by tug boats, so maybe not.

I also do not know what aircraft carrier they are talking about. In fact, I find it strange that the second part of the story is titled, Aircraft Carrier, yet there is but one mention in the entire section regarding aircraft carriers. That one mention is as simple as stating it is large enough to handle them. There are no supporting statements to the fact or any other statements relevant to aircraft carriers.

I saw that. I guess we'll see. China has one now I think but last I heard they didn't have a plane to trap on it. Like you, I have just seen tugs yanking ours around, especially our Nimitz class. Did you see that pic that came around on the net awhile back about the Ronald Regan at Pearl and how it just totally dwarfed the Arizona memorial?

Just googled it. Amazing pic. Also has 4 tug boats, one of which is pushing the port side bow...lol Mystery solved.

It was very impressive from the ground...my resident mate and long time friend's family compound is hard up against the last marker going in where you could count the rivets on the underbellies. I spent dinner one Chinese New Year with the family as the aircraft (all international then) came over every three to five minutes. Conversation stopped mid sentence and resumed without missing a syllable.

At a reception in HK one of the Cathay drivers stated it was a little like doing a carrier landing with a 74. I certainly believed him.

Well, he is about right. If you got it lined up and then to the ground, you stuck it. No place for a greaser.lol Fixin' to head out later this morning for KISN on a short notice trip. Maybe overnite.ttyl

Enjoy. It is June. January would not be quite as pleasant...having grown up 500 Km to the North.

Had a heat wave. It got up to about 75 mid afternoon. We were wheels up at 1630 and home about 1800 or so.
