China Airlines 747 Parts fall off in flight and hit a House in ATL

Submitted
Federal authorities are investigating why pieces of a 747 cargo plane crashed into the woman's house Sunday afternoon. The woman lives on Newton Estate Drive in Clayton County, along a direct flight path to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Another piece of the plane landed at a Walmart on Anvil Block Road, just a couple of miles away. (www.wsbtv.com) More...

With extra capacity cargo magazines.

No civilian has a legitimate use for an airplane that big. The FAA could never have forseen the destruction they could cause. They never would have intended for people to have them. We need common sense solutions. Perhaps limit civilians to 737s.

Sounds like the logical solution to panic and ask questions later!!!

Ban 747s. It's for the children.

As incredibly busy as ATL is with constant operations, I'm really surprised this doesn't happen more often. When I lived in Atlanta a few years back, there was always a story or two about tools falling out of the sky from some Delta flight that had just spent time in the maint shed there. This is much more disturbing, wing parts off a 747... if that comes down, it'll be much more of a mess than a CRJ200 lawn dart.

Better for this lady it was part of the wing and not a blue snow ball.

With China knock offs of every product available - they even have counterfeit apple STORES - I wouldn't be at all surprised if it wasn't a real Boeing. I ordered a 256gb thumb drive for 25 dollars- looks and feels (and works) just like the Kingston one that costs 500 bucks, except its USB 2.0 vs. 3.0 despite it being advertised as 3.0 but. It's probably a being 747 not a Boeing 747. Lol

LOL. BTW, how you doing these days. Did you have that other surgery and, if so, did it help any?
captainjman

Hey Preacher, I had my surgery - i am just now starting to use my ipad - not really able to use my computer because it hurts to sit upright or stand up. they fuzed T2-L2 and when I woke up from general I was surprised how much more it hurt. I was told it could end up hurting more but I had to take the gamble because living with that pain was horrible.. Now I have even worse pain. I was also told it could take 1-1.5 years to get better. So I am TRYING to stay positive despite the increase in pain. There was a job fair here in Chicago that a friend told me about.. I wanted to go but I would have to go in a wheelchair and it costs 139 dollars to get in the door. It seems dumb to go to a job fair when I couldn't even accept a job offer if they gave me one -

Word to the wise - spine fusions are not easy operations - as the US passes more anti-pain medication laws and crackdowns from the DEA - rather than a proper amount of morphine during surgery they give hallucinogens like acid - called Ketamine. It does nothing to help with pain, but gives horrible hallucinations. It took three days for the ketamine to exit my body- and trust me, if you are cut expect to have a lot more pain than you are prepared for (on major surgeries) -

PS - I am using voice recognition on my ipad, and I am not proof reading - so if there are errors in spelling or grammar or the wrong words - sorry, I just don't care about that stuff with this pain.

I bet some "red-neck Wal-Martian" named Bubba would turn the parts into a "spoiler" for his beat up pick-up truck.

I wonder if these parts are on the airline's MEL list for their 747's!!! After all why would you need wing components to work properly, they're such a minor detail!!!

An update to this story from WSB-TV Channel 2 in Atlanta (ABC affiliate):

China Airlines has gone to the home of the resident and made face to face contact and apologized. They will be sending an insurance adjuster for her claim and will take care of the damages.

They never lifted a finger to help me or compensate me when the cockpit access stair had a funky repair that failed and I ended up falling down onto the main deck. Was on workmans comp for two weeks. Wanted to sue their asses but the station manager and my supervisor were more concerned with keeping them as customers!

Not as bad as the Evergreen that lost an Engine shortly after T/O from Anchorage.
The "dogbone" ended up going through an apartment roof and ended up on a bed where a woman had just been folding clothes! The engine fell into a vacant lot next to a mini mall. The main cause was high wind coming off the mountains.

Keep your parts to yourself!

And on top of everything else, China Airlines won't talk to her so she don't know who is going to pay for repairs. She is lucky though. It could have been the whole plane.lol

Keep in mind this, and this says more about their maintenance record than the B747.

CAL611 completely broke apart midflight, and that was a B742, if I remember correctly. Improper maintenance from 22 years before the flight was the cause of the breakup. That certainly assists in putting their maintenance record under scrutiny for this incident.

That repair (to the aft pressure bulkhead) was designed and performed by Boeing engineers.

Pieces of 747 fall on woman’s house and Walmart lot

Pieces of a 747 cargo plane fell onto a woman's house and a Walmart parking lot in Georgia on Sunday afternoon. Federal authorities are investigating why.

Homeowner Pamela Ware spoke with WSBTV.com about the experience.

"And boom! I was like, 'Huh?' Actually, I hit the floor," Ware told WSBTV.com. "If it had landed in here, because that is just Sheetrock, it would have … oh boy, I wouldn't be no good."

The piece of debris fell through Ware's roof, leaving two holes. It later bounced onto the yard, according to WSBTV.com. A few miles away, a 20-foot-long portion of the plane's wing fell onto the Walmart store's parking lot. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in either case.

According to WSBTV.com, investigators said the cargo plane had been flying from Anchorage. It was roughly five miles east of Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport when pieces of the right wing broke off. The pilot declared an emergency and was able to land safely.

The home owner is wondering who will pay for repairs? Um, it is called HOME OWNERS INSURANCE. Every home owner is required to have it. Furthermore, I live in ATL and Hartsfield has never caused me any issues. However, PDK airport is a nuisance and a danger to all who live in the area.

someone hit the flaps "detach" switch on approach. Whoops lol.

It is only required by your mortgage holder. No mortgage, you can go without it. Not that it would be wise to do so.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 2
I don't understand why you believe the homeowner should have to file a claim for repairs. That'd be like a car crashing into yours - would you expect to have to have your insurance cover the damage caused by the other party? I don't think so.
und1974
und1974 2
I agree PDK is a nuisance. Flightpath directly over parts of I-285 which is busy 24/7.

You can see Buffs in various stages of rebuild in Google Earth at Tinker AFB. I can see how this happens with how many parts get torn off these things. Wings & tails laying on the ground near hangars... amazing they fly again.

They just need to clear out a lane or 2 of 285 for about a mile and a half, give it to the planes and close down PDK. Nuisance problem and short runways solved.lol

What a crappy report!! How about a tail number? Reporter didn't even check the age of the plane. Just whooped it up that a house was hit and the lady is OK, darn - that cost a few ratings points. I wish there was some substantial news in these reports. This is an aviation interest site.

OMG, that's scary. Lucky the plane didn't crash, It would have added to the long list of China Airlines crashes. I think China Airlines should not fly anymore or retire there 747s.

Maybe an unhappy mchanic, "forgot" a few bolts ... beause he had "a few screws loose" .. Lucky for the crew they were not in the news due to a worse situation, but sounds like there will be some unemployed people
