Qantas CEO "Very P*ssed Off" With Boeing Over 787 Delays

Submitted
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce says he is "very pissed off" at Boeing over the delays to the 787 Dreamliner, which would have seen the airline enjoying significantly lower costs in fuel and maintenance compared to the Red Roo's current aging fleet. (www.ausbt.com.au) More...

Hrm, how about boeing stop bowing down the pressure of giving money/discounts for these things being late... Think about it... if air india cancels their order, their slots can be used to bump up others... Air India would only hurt themselves, since if they want to aircraft of Airbus, they'd have to get in the back of the line... Again, what's the cost of repainting an A/C and re-provision the interior and selling to another airline vs all these discounts/refunds?

You are buying a brand new state of the art aircraft, there are going to be delays, get over it.

I suppose Mr. Joyce would be all smiles if he had the B787 on time, but an uncontained engine exploded over Batam? How about a few wing cracks? The oil pipe fiasco on his A380 cost $139 million, needed 40,000 tons of tools and parts, and 179 technicians from 9 countries to make it fly again after almost a year as a ramp Queen. The B787 is new to the sky, but no such service problems seem evident. I would be rather delighted to fly with a plane that had been built with the time necessary to make it the right stuff, as opposed to the "incredible simulation from Toulose."

He should be used to it...already had enough practice with Airbus. He'll get over it. These are complex machines that take time to develop. Things happen and you can't just say with 100% certainty when you can deliver one from scratch...

True, but there is something to be said about not giving unreasonable estimates. Finishing a couple months late = bad luck. Finishing years late = somebody really screwed up.

Sounds like Qantas is going to cry like Air India did and try to squeeze more money out of Boeing. Wow DELAYS? Who would have thought a brand new aircraft with new untested technology would be delivered on time? You bought into it Qantas now wait your turn like everyone else. They will deliver your aircraft when its your turn. And Zach love the comment on waiting on Airbus. Not to mention the problems they are having with that SUPERJUMBO PILE. Opps added the pile to the title ;)

If nobody expected it to be on time, then why on earth did they say it would be ready then? It's new technology, so extend the timeline. What's the worst that could happen - you deliver early? "We haven't done it before" doesn't excuse them from being years late.

Ever built an airplane from scratch? Ever had to get international refulatory approval to bring a $100 million product to market? No? Didn't think so.

Well, with fuel doubled and losses mounting, he has to have a whiping boy somewhere to blame the losses on. Besides, aren't they the ones sponsoring the big dreamliner tour later this month?

What an ass. It's not like he just found out the delivery schedule and it's not Boeing's fault the price of fuel has skyrocketed. Wonder if those A380 issues had any impact on their P&L? Is he "pissed" at Airbus too? Just wondering. Sounds like he needs to do a little more managing of his own company and less whining about somebody else's.

After watching so many episodes of Air Crash Investigations, you would agree that Boeing needs to take however long it takes to test the hell out of the 787's systems.

the planes are built fine...its the lack of training from the airline that causes crashes. safety is expensive and management dont wanna take a pay cut.
