This really should not have been news, No one got hurt or Died, Plane landed safely, Crew did what they were trained to do.. Crew looses and engine, executes a "Air Return" to field, landed safely, I assume he declared an emergency. So what, I work maintenance control. Air Returns don't happen every day and it is for a numerous amount of reasons, and this one makes the news because it coughed a little metal. If people knew how much metal actually falls to the sky they would really be surprised.

An ETOPS quqalified aircraft is supposed to have highly reliable engines that are tested to exacting standards! So said Boeing when they spearheaded the ETOPS. This is some engine, so reliable that it can throw spares in the air.In a nutshell the philosophy of ETOPS is that "Two engines are more abundant than Four"
Fuel dump with full fuel, the rate is 2,500kgs per minute, so to get to around MLDG weight if they took off at MTOFF weight of 351,300kgs to 251,300kgs you work it out. Not too bad considering it's the only 2nd failure I know about of B777 in about 15 years, last one being EK out of Melbourne Oz.
