I just hope that parachute doesn't provide a false sense of security for folks. It may slow the descent out of the sky and it may save some lives but there is no guarantee what kind of terrain you will go into coming down.

When properly trained the chute is an invaluable tool of last resort that most aircraft don't possess, so a doomed pilot has one more chance to survive from a bad situation (however he/she got into it).

The key in my opinion is proper training - first on how to be, and maintain proper piloting skills, and second on how to properly utilize the chute system. Surprisingly, it is harder to train a pilot to pull the chute as the type A personalities of pilots doesn't lend itself to deciding to use a last resort safety system.

True but if everything else is circling the drain and there is no other option, well....
I do agree about the false sense of security as some of the ones who have used it should not have been where they were at. Way over there head in weather some were saved but just like those who do not have chutes in there's should not have done it. Cant fix stupid I guess.

Well, you kinda nailed it, if no other option but as you said, you can't fix stupid, and I wonder if some might give up prematurely and not try and fly their way our of a bad situation, whether they should have been there or not.

Reading the reports about using it on there web site has been one or two that were in question in my mind. By the way never flew anything heavy but did once push the weather, its getting better, well it didn't and made a 180 as suddenly was IFR made it out but didn't think much of myself for doing it also had a pax with me. Like they say stupid is as stupid does, so I qualify for that one and was lucky.

It is nice to get "The Forrest Gump Award" and live to tell about winning it! Pity the other guy.

When you survive to say 'the next time I do that it will be a mistake', it's part of the learning curve.

Difference between stupid and making a mistake. I have headed into wx not wanting to go to trouble of altitude or heading change with ATC, figuring I could just punch on thru it and be done with it.. Let's just say that hindsight being 20-20, I should have. None of us are perfect. Most of us have that gift of hindsight. If we use it to keep something from happening again, that is called experience. If we pay no attention to it and go on, that is called stupidity.

I was on a Delta MD-90 (not equipped with a parachute)last night and made it home safely! I may be pushing my luck but am scheduled to do it again next week.

I can recognize a trend setter when I hear one, keep up the good work. We'd have a plethora of doctors if the chute had come out with the Fork tailed doctor killer or the v-tailed Bonanza in Flying Mag. terms. Course we'd have a larger plethora of lawyers too. Cheers!

For $ 1 to 1.2 million you can buy a fully reburbished Beech 90 with more powerful PT-6s than the original ones cruising at 260 t0 270 kts. carrying one maybe two more people than the Cirrus and having a potty. The Cirrus SF50 costs twice as much, flies a bit faster aliright by tell me if they can plan on a 1200 mile long flight without concern that if Mother Nature comes calling a passenger won't be asing the pilot to drop down like the devil or else (LOL!!).

From SR-22 POH: "VPD 133 KIAS 135 KCAS Maximum Demonstrated Parachute Deployment
Speed is the maximum speed at which parachute deployment has been demonstrated." (Wondering what altitudes and speeds the SF50 has for limitations)

There is no altitude listed for pulling the handle; legal liability on the company. The parachute is like an automobile air bag; only one way to test it!! One thing a pilot must do is stabilize the aircraft before removing the cover and pulling the handle. Falls at 1500 fpm. Do it right, as we have seen from prior incidents, and walk away from the hospital!
