A Chinese visa used to be gratis and issued while you stood at the counter, but then the US started charging outrageous amounts for foreign nationals to get a US visa. So other countries started charging Americans stupid high fees for a visa(China is $ 140), make you wait 4 days, and restricting the validity to very short intervals.

The US policy of balancing the State Department budget on the backs of visa applicants is counterproductive to the US GNP. Visitors always inject money into our economy, and the money flow results in larger receipts to the Treasury, more than offsetting expenses of granting a visa.

I wonder if they have addressed the (outside)-PEK-PVG-(outside), the double connection in China has been visa required. Also what happens if you get delayed in China longer than 72 hours, due to mechanical issues. You cannot simply apply for a visa in China.
When we travel through we get visa's just incase.
