New ATC Changes At Chicago's O'Hare Airport Reduce Midair Collision Chances

Submitted
In an effort to reduce the risk of midair collisions, new air traffic control patters have begun at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. This change was promoted by a pair of near missed at the airport in 2011, in which planes came within a few hundred feet of each other during two separate incidents. Part of the revision includes a warning system... (www.thefloridanewsjournal.com) More...

With MDW and ORD being so close, they do need to make changes... There are too many incidences to blame it all on the pilots or controllers. It is the system.

I agree and it is that way in a lot of the metro areas with 2 busy fields, such as Dallas, Houston, and DC. Tracon does the handoff, BUT in these 2 instances it was specifically on the controllers. What is not real clear, it was just the other day when the NTSB came out with their recommendations and now we have the FAA inplementing them. I haven't ever seen the FAA move that fast on anything. Both these incidents happened last year and I wonder if the FAA didn't do somthing then as the article says it hasn't happened since.

They are still buying land out south for the new airport. Big fight going on between the county and the city of Chicago for control.

Is that for a whole new Airport or a runway realignment? There has been some flap on here about that and the increased noise, but I don't know all about that I'd like to.

This is for a whole new airport. They have been buying houses and farms for years now. Most of the people who live in the area hate it. My brother is the city manager for Monee (Windy city south truck stop). It is a huge political football with Jesse Jackson Jr. right in the middle of it. Chicago is in Cook county and the new airport will be in Will county. Chicago wants control-Will county wants control. Also, included in the area they need to purchase is C56 which is owned by Jim Bult (who is in the trucking business big time) and he has just spent over 30 mil in the past few years expanding his airport that he flies his jet out of. It is a great little airport. He claims nobody has ever talked to him about selling. Will be interestin to see how it plays out. When I get my plane I'll be using C56 instead of IGQ as it is only a couple miles from brother's place.
