US Airways has reached an agreement to merge with American Airlines after entering collective bargaining pacts with three of the company's labor unions. The deal was largely expected after American Airlines' parent company, AMR, entered bankruptcy and US Airways expressed interest. (finance.yahoo.com) More...
If one of the CEO denies it then it is probably a done deal . Just ask the Delta CEO. He lied his rear end off denying Delta was merging with NWA . Turns out it was a done deal. Oh and Keven Swiss. Don't change yet. Delta has just as many people complainng about them. So does United or whatever they are called these days. No offense United but I really don't like your paint jobs on your planes. They look like you can't make up your mind who you want to be. Ok everyone rant is over. :)
And haven't you seen that the paint jobs are so old that you can make out the former owner´s logo like Allegheny (aka Agony) and Mohawk (Mou what!) and the beat goes on....LOL!
LOL. The US Airways A319 I was on a couple of weeks ago still had the America West logo on the tail but the US Airways name on the side. According to the registration, it was delivered in 2005. But still why wouldn't they fully update the livery?
That baffles me some. America West (obviously in Tempe, AZ) not only didn't die, but under Bill Franke's and now Doug Parker's leadership has not only successfully surfaced from bankruptcy, but is doing so well it's pulled US Airways out of its troubles and is now moving on to do the same with American. I'm not being flippant, but rather pointing out my confusion as to why you would say Tempe is where good airlines go to die. Could you give me your thoughts, please? Thanks.
What would they call this new airline? Gooney Bird Air. Both airlines already have significant customer service problems, and neither airline is knocking the door down for their use of fuel efficient aircraft. It would seem to me that these problems would become catastrophic, if combined.
I flew with US Airways a couple of weeks ago and with all of the bad reviews I was shocked to get pretty good service. In terms of fleet, you can probably kiss those old MD-80s goodbye.
US can reach a deal with AA's unions, but it still can't reach deals with the pilots' or FAs' unions from the American West merger over 5 years ago. US is still operating two airlines, with separate planes, crews, contracts, and seniority lists: "east" from the pre-merger US Airways and "west" from America West.
US Airways is not a bad airline to fly on. I prefer them over United and all these other airlines anyday. Only problem i have ever had on AWE is that i was late arriving to charlotte (my destination airport)and there were rude passengers on board .
There goes the next to the last of my favorites. Pan Am, Braniff, Continental, Mid-Continent, Trans Texas, Western, Eastern and TWA. Hang in their Alaska.
Everyone knows Delta of today is a 180 degrees from Delta of the 70's.
Uh not really. Many of the AA MDs are Reno and TWA. Remember also US is primarily an Airbus fleet now. Most of the 737 (all I think) will be gone by the end of this year.
Same here. I was hesitant about booking with US back in December based on all of the horrid reviews their service gets, but I was actually quite impressed and I'd fly with them again.
Agreed. AA operates many old MD-80 aircraft. They have tons of new stuff ordered and optioned but this will take quite awhile. How do you place these huge orders and then declare bankruptcy?
It was right there between Trans Texas and Eastern :). My wife and I once won a trip on Western from Houston via Denver via L.A. to Honolulu. On the exact same reverse return we were the ONLY two passengers in coach between Denver and Houston. I guess that's why they expired :(. Those champaigne flights were very very nice.
AWE didn't "take over" or "buy out" or "save" USAIRWAYS. It was a merger in the true sense. In fact, AIRWAYS brought the stability and operation that the Cactus management built on to be a competitive and operationally successful operation. The PHX operation is bolstered by the vibrant health of the East operation. Who says that the AB fleet is not fuel efficient? Some posters are correct in saying that the 737 fleet at Cactus will disappear soon, to be replaced by new AB's coming as we speak. As one 737 goes, a brand new AB come in.
I just cannot imagine how absolutely awful the combined airline will be. I'm sure the distillation of the worst customer service of each company will be presented to the travelling public in some disgustingly rude espresso of service.
American is the stronger brand, has more FFs, and will be the brand that survives. Same as when AW took over USAir. Pretty remarkable accomplishment, from a corporate perspective. Delta/NW learned a lot from how US and AW merged (what not to do). Now maybe the USAir unions and management will learn from the Delta/NW merger. It makes sense that United, AA and Delta will remain the big 3 for years to come. Alaska is next (probably combine with Delta, my guess).
Combining "US" and "American", seems like "USUS" or maybe we should just call it, "USSR" since that one is available now. Seems like the performance of the new company might match that of what they used to have in Soviet Land many years ago.
Just one more reason for me to be my own airline. Thanks to the major airlines for making General Aviation an affordable and desirable alternative. Might as well stop trying to accumulate or redeem "freeeky flier miles" now.
Well who knows this could be better for aa.... This could be the best time for them to sell all there md 80's and 81's and start replacing them with the airbus a319's 20's and 21's, American has an issue with not having the right aircrafts for smaller hubs... And they loose there business to American eagle... now with the airbus they can make into those smaller hubs rather then sending a 757-200 or a 737-900 with only half the flight full, that is why they are bleeding money and with the rising cost of fuel.. they are sending flights empty.. Who knows maybe this will be better then everyone thinks you have to rememeber that all those old aircrafts use so much fuel and take a lot more to keep them in service rather then newer airbus's and boeing aircrafts.
I would think this will pan out better... I currently work at ORD... I'm all for them teaming up with us airways
I believe the aircraft in question is intentionally painted in the old America West logo to honor the US Airways heritage. They also have aircraft painted in the former PSA as well as Allegheny and Piedmont logos.
US AFA flight attendants just voted down a contract... I don't think the US pilots still have a contract, either. I just think a US/AA merger will be an unmitigated disaster. The fools in Tempe know how to run a LCC. They don't know how to run an international airline. I can just see Tempe trained people running the show in Hong Kong or Shanghi...
I used to work in AW Labor Relations, and just to clarify, where you say you don't think the pilots still have a contract ... the contracts don't expire - they become "amendable".
Unions for US Airways, American Airlines sign merger agreement
Charlotte--US Airways took a huge step toward a merger with bankrupt American Airlines on Friday, as the carrier and American's three largest unions announced they have signed agreements for contract terms.
CBS News is reporting that U.S. Airways has filed papers to begin the process of taking over American Airlines. U.S. Airways CEO Doug Parker disputed an earlier CBS News report that an agreement between the two airlines on a merger had been reached.
