Airbus is offering US airlines buying its A320 passenger jet extra-wide seats for obese passengers, leading to fatter profits, Airbus's aircraft interiors director says. (www.watoday.com.au) More...
I agree, all airline seats are too small for normal people....and Im a big guy!!! I dont see how a normal sized person can wriggle skinny behinds into those pathetic seats that airlines use...Apparently, they have not noticed that the population has gotten bigger over the years...
Yes, CEOs and the pinheads in the accounting departments that want more butts into the seats rather than making the travel experience comfortable for everyone...Its all about money...
What's next? A total weight limit per passenger, including checked bag and carry-on. If you're over the limit, there's an escalating surcharge. You never know..............
Airlines already cramp people in there airplanes and seating is terrible. Not enough leg room (pitch) and seats are uncomfortable. If they are doing this only for large people, and charging more, is not answer. Just a way to rip of people wanting a little more comfort.
There was a short lived airline called Air 1. They used 727s and all first class seats and a generous pitch a coach prices. I use to fly them till they went bust.
Way back in the early days, you had to be weighted including baggage. You were charged for excessive baggage back then. I don't think they charged more for the weight of the passenger. The pilots used the weight data in there calculations. WN is doing it today in charging you for a second seat if you are a "large" person.
There also used to be an airline that had all 1st class seats as well called Midwest Express....But because people want to cheap out and pay greyhound prices to fly anywhere, Midwest Express disappeared!!! Sad!!!!
Simple reason for failure of Air 1 and a couple of others that tried that approach - they were too small to fly a large network to make the economics work out. I think Air 1 original network was KC to STL to DCA and STL to LGA. They started with a couple of 727. Later they tried to expand and added a few 727S.
You now how I see this, this is Europe thinking the US has the obesity problem and wants to sell it to US airlines, however obesity is a global problem. How about making all seats wider and isles smaller because F/As are supposed to have model bodies and can fit in there with their trolleys!
One has to ask the question...what about tall, muscular and elderly people who require more room? Seems crazy to me.
