The rising tide of incivility continues to loom larger in this country each and every day!! Both parties are guilty here: the F/A for not having enough training and discipline on handling the situation...and a few of the passengers for the verbal abuse that resulted during the conflict. And American is at fault, too, for allowing this aircraft to remain on the tarmac for six (6) hours!!!! Shame on you, AA...thirty-five years ago you were doing things right, but gradually you decided that the emphasis on customer impact just wasn't worth the time, training, and money. No wonder you have fallen into the abyss. C.R. Smith must be rolling over in his grave!!!

Richard, it is not an excuse for AA or any other carrier, BUT, 35 years ago, all was regulated and flying was a wonderful experience. Now, 33 years past de-regulation, it is not so much an experience as an ordeal.

You ever fly to Europe as PIC Wayne?
preacher1
preacher1 1
No, as a matter of fact Roland, the only time I went across the pond thataway was in 58 as an army brat. Ship over(USS Geiger) and flew back 3 years later(some kind of 4 engine(RR) turbo prop belonging to Seaboard AL). I went to Vietnam during that time and flew as PIC in/out of the old KaiTak and Seoul a few times, but the biggest end of our stuff was domestic. The reason we always had such a big plane is that most time, the whole office went and a lot of times, they had their meetings right on the plane at the Airport.

I had an internet pal from the USA, he has now passed over, that was a radio operator I think with USAF in the 50s. He worked out of N Africa I think. He used to relay HF messages by trailing a long wire antenna out of his machine..also propellor..for the USA commercial carriers that were heading to Europe in their Connies. Makes you realise just how far we have moved on with technology in the last 50 years.

Not to barge in to this conversation, but it's pretty incredible to consider that it's only been a few more than 100 years since Orville and Wilbur first took wing on the dunes at Kitty hawk. Today we transport 500 men and their equipment non-stop to the middle East and rocket men to space to spend months on a permanent work station. I guess that's movin' on with technology.

I totally agree with Donna. Yes, we put our lives on the line each time and every time we board a aircraft, however, that absolutely does NOT give us right to speak to passengers in the manner this FA did. There are SO many other resources we have, including getting the captain involved if necessary.
Shame on him..... It makes us all look bad.

The flight attendant is responsible for the cabin...People don't realize that by flying on airlines, they are subject to FAA regulations of not interfering with flight crews, which includes flight attendants. While I certainly don't condone the particular language he used, he was facing mob mentality (esp. flying out of New York)... If anything, the police should have removed the threatening people from the flight too...a lot of people in this country are so self-centered (selfish) and polarized that they are just looking for any excuse to spit their venom...I'm sure those passengers would LOVE to work as many hours as the F/A's do, but not get paid until the doors close and the plane takes off...

I get what you're saying, but obviously this guy is missing some basic customer service skills. Even a mediocre F/A could have defused this situation at about a dozen different points.

And nobody forced the guy to sign up, so he can quit any time if he doesn't like the way his job works.

From the Passenger point of view, I would point out the following.
1. The cost of flying is high, but I am willing to pay for the service to spend more time
at the detination.
2. It's chaotic. From getting there with enough time to be treated as a terrorist, to standing in various lines, trying to figure out where your supposr to be.
3. Your stuffed in chairs that would not pass any child safety rules in any state. You are in danger of being brained by all the carry on suit cases, that should be in the hold.
4. Your saftey is in the hands of strangers who may or maynot be the person to be in charge at that particular moment.
5. You have no control of anything, you can be held hostage for up to 3 hours who don't have to tell you whaat or why or if you even have opptions.
And you can't believe that I am STRESSSSED? And some jerk asks me if I have the balls to get off the aircraft. I sure as hell do and I would bring his ass with me. To many years in police uniform to take that kind of bull.

Sounds like the "weather" inside the cabin was below minimums. I would have taken a later flight or rented a car, but then I am not important like a New Yorker with places to go, people to see, and deals to be done.

AWAAlum
AWAAlum 2
They were just blowing off steam. It's what people do when their plans are no longer in their control. We all do - just in our own way. And as much as I agree that the F/A was in charge, you are right, it is a service industry, and he could have attempted to calm the pax rather than escalate their ire with his attitude. It's human nature NOT to be demeaned when they're paying for the service. At least that's how I see it. I'm embarrassed to think how I may have responded if a F/A talked to me that way. I remember how seriously pax letters of complaint were taken at America West - they carried a lot of weight.
faborange
I am one of those "Moronic,Nobody Fa's" as you so kindly put it.
You, Mr HotShot Pilot, wouldn't last a day doing what I do, 85 hrs.a month.
You would probably be flying off the handle before pushback, given YOUR social skills.
And in case of an emergency, my colleagues and myself would be evacuating 200 plus passengers while you would be hightailing it through the cockpit window!
Not all of you guys are Capt. Sullenberg...
WALLACE24
WALLACE24 4
This particular FA acted moronic to be in a service industry.I did not say all are morons. You can't talk to people like that and expect a good result. He is a nobody in the chain of events and has no power to change them. He has no control over the plane, the schedule, the fuel, etc etc. My point was the passengers yelling and screaming were acting as bad or worse than him. I have never been rude to any FA on any flightr I was ever on. I think I have enough sense to know the FA has no control over abnormal operations. Sorry about your ruffled feathers, but read it a little closer....

I think your last line hits it on the head. She needs to read it a little closer. I read it as you calling the PAX moronic, not the FA. As you say, anybody oughta know that the FA has no real contol over what's happening. All she/he can do is relay the griping to the flight deck. To me, in most cases, the Captain bears a lot of the responsibility for not letting everybody know what is going on.
WALLACE24
WALLACE24 2
Letting people know what's up will suffice for most people. Of course their are the chosen few that can't except anything less than what they want. A good FA would have known that arguing will only escalate the situation. Wonder who those people take their frustrations out on when there is a traffic jam because of a bad wreck? Think they go yell at the injured for taking up their valuable time?

You know....I'm defending F/A's....not only because I chose that career...I loved people and I loved flying! Flight Attendants are not just Flight Attendants! I, personally, happen to be a Pilot, as well! I'm proud of my service and I did it well. I find it difficult that people forget....so quickly...about my "Flying Partners" and pax vaperized when they hit one of the "Twin Towers" and another in Shanksville, PA. They are heroes to me! The entire crew of UAL 232, in Souix City are heroes to me. Al Haines and crew brought the DC-10 down the best way that was humanly possible! Did you know that they re-enacted their emergency on the simulator and there were no survivers? But the cockpit and cabin crew worked together to save almost half of souls on board! I personally know Al and the Crew of 232. Cockpit crew ....Seattle based. I was Seattle based. I guess what I'm trying to say is that we have trained professionals onboard and they are risking their lives everytime they leave the "Blocks"! Don't forget that Crew members are there for you! They deserve to be treated the way you would like to be treated. Most situations are out of their control! Again...never forget 9/11.

Hear hear! I don't imagine there's anyone who will disagree with anything you've said. However, for me, it doesn't change the fact that this particular F/A responded to complaints in an unprofessional and irresponsible fashion. Sadly, dealing with irate pax is just part of the job and this F/A didn't perform his job correctly.
signmanbob
Robert Yunque 2
Because the F/A made a mistake, maybe was having a bad day, maybe was just reaching the end of his patience, does that mean that the PAX have to act so unprofessional, inconsiderate, insensitive and "ME" oriented?
The F/A didn't cause the plane to delay. He is just doing his job. Maybe not as well as he could have that day, but who peaks everyday?

JD345
JD345 0
That's exactly it. Flights get delayed and cancelled all the time and passengers are going to be frustrated... the vast majority of F/As can deal with it, and it's not until they run into this guy that a situation explodes like this.

It's important to "bring it" every day because a passenger can fly all the time and deal with 10,000 different F/As that do just fine, and then run into 1 guy in this video and have a negative impression of F/As in general.

But Thank the Ground they Walk on when something bad happen and make it out safely.
mhlansdell00
Mark Lansdell 2
No matter how you justify it this does not speak well for AAL. The only thing the airlines have to sell is service. Without the passengers there is no need for FAs at all. I've never known freight to insist on returning to the gate. That does not give the passengers the right to be rude or disregard the regulations, but some one broke a promise when the flight was delayed for so long no matter whose fault it was. I bet the PAX weren't ever told of the delay or who was responsible. And then you wonder why passengers get obstinate. You can't treat them like mushrooms and then expect them to be pleasant and cordial.

By the way, after the safety briefing the airline changes the FA's job to bar tender and waitstaff. I does not revert back until there is some kind of emergency or the cockpit announces their approach and beginning of the landing routine.

I'm not a self proclaimed "expert" in airline operations, nor am I a flight attendant, but I am a pilot, former airline employee, and have been working in the airport industry for over 10 years. I've observed both the good and bad sides of the airlines. As with any profession, there are those people that feel they are better than the people they are serving (yes, serving!), and feel they can have an attitude with them whenever the feel. I've witnessed flight attendants be the most couteous people on the face of the Earth, and then also they talking to me as if I was an ignorant idiot that didn't know one end of the plane from the other (when in all actuallity, I probably had more hours in that type of aircraft than the person flying it). With that said, in defense of the "good" flight attendants, I feel they outnumber the "bad" flight attendants by at least 5 to 1. So all I have to say to the "bad" ones is, you are not better than the people you are serving (again, yes, SERVING) and "LOSE THE ATTITUDE"!

Hum.... I think that the two parts here have to apologize for their bad attitude. Maybe Jose Serrano needs a bit af something called vacation! But there is something I just don't understand in general population attitude: why do they think everything is always due to them????? I absolutely don't think the FA here was joy jumping about all those delays! And this is part of the game when you chose to take the plane: there might be some delays. Where and why were they running for? I don't think one of those wanabees is the president. Take a nap and do nothing, it's gonna past! Good day folks!

A lot of problems that arise on airlines today is simply no communication. If they would inform people of the problems and delays before 6 hours has gone by people wouldn't be so pissed off. 9 out of 10 flights now days you never hear the pilots voice, the F/A spits through their words and you can't understand them. And even worse the people at the gate act like zombie's and won't even talk to you. But like ever thing else it all trickles down from pis poor upper management. Like I have always said, employee's attitudes are a direct reflection of management!

Just an observation on my part because I am a Boeing Brat! And I know how aviation is so advanced! Many advancements....we can't wrap our brain around because technology is overpowering our simplistic mental capacity! It's almost overwheming because it's happening so fast! I don't want to negative but think about it....people don't communicate verbally to eachother anymore! People text people who are in the same room at the same time! I feel we have to get down to basics and actually have a one on one, face to face diaolog with eachother! Again, the world is not in sync....the is no communication....except what I'm doing right now! It's sad. I think that is where communication has broken down! Therefore, on a one and one conversation, the younger generation has absolutely no social or communication skills! Maybe that's what happened to the "Eagle" F/A. I see the initial problem here is with the flight dispatcher. They dole out the fuel with an eyedropper like they are paying for it themselves. Then the plane gets stuck in the conga line and winds up going back to the gate for more fuel. I am firm believer that the

He should be summarily fired. No way should a flight attendant or pilot ever talk to customers that way. We all realize that delays occur for a variety of reasons--most of which are beyond the control of the flight crew or cabin attendants. The fact is that the airplane simply should not be boarded unless the airliner is going to fly. Having been stuck behind 25 outbound flights at LGA with concurrent weather delays over to ORD and left on an airplane for 8+ hours is ridiculous. This is no way to treat customers. Neither is using abusive language and acking like a jerk. Fire this individual immedately. He works for the passengers. I've lived in Japan for over twenty years and I have had very, very good experience with the airlines of Japan. The flight attendants are so well trained to serve the customers. I've not seen any attendants on the Japanese airlines ever lose their composure in front of the passenger. Oh yes, they go back to the galley area and express their feelings with other attendants but when they come back to the cabin they are smiling and being very professional. It should be like careers that a person has a deep passion to do rather doing it for the job that will build an image for all flight attendants. It would be quite the experiment to challenge any passenger to be a Flight Attendant for a day...with weather delays ( it's all the F/A's fault by the way ), mechanicals ( an airplane is a machine for Gods sake ), again F/A's fault! I am a retired F/A of over 30 years. I flew when people had class...they dressed up....accepted what was given to them and they actually said "Thankyou" and "Please"! Now....the attitude is "It's all about me and what are you going to do about it?"
We were 14th in line for T/O and I had a guys leap over 3 people to get to the aisle to confront me.This was a wide-body, I might add. He got in my face and said "this is Bullshit and I'm going to fly American next time!" F/A's are trained safety professionals and their top priority is to save your sorry ass! Think about that the next time you travel and try saying "please" and "thankyou"! What a delightful and uplifting concept!

It's people who have attitudes like yours that makes being a Flight Attendant a very difficult job! Are you always happy and "skippy" at your job, sir? Have you ever been hit by a passenger because he didn't get enough ice in his glass? I'm thankful that I got out when I did because there are too many people like you that make flying miserable....not only for Flight Attendants but your fellow passengers as well!

I'm not a FA, but I agree with you. And as a passenger, I'd like to see most of these people off the plane and on a bus, where they belong. Raise prices and get the bus-people out!

The F/A was distributing the complimentary drinks... she gets to my row and asks the aisle and middle seats what they want, then asks what I want. I say that I'll have a Coke. She instantly scowls at me and snaps, "We don't have Coke, we have Pepsi. Weren't you listening?"

I know she repeats the same thing over and over again day in and day out for years. But that is NOT my problem. If she doesn't like it, she should try to find an F/A job at FedEx.

I'm an airline dork. I know how it is -- I get it. I'm not an entitled brat and those entitled brats that cause problems on flights irritate me, too. I get it. There are pricks to deal with. But if you respond to prickery with more prickery and then take that prickery and push it off on people who are NOT pricks, you have joined forces with the pricks.

If you can't deal with pricks every day without getting irritated and taking that out on anyone who happens to talk to you at the wrong time, get out of customer service.

Or go find one of your local law enforcement officers and tell him how hard your job is because of all the a-holes... he'll certainly be overwhelmed with sympathy.

I agree. It isn't as though what they will be paid is kept secret from them. What is all the hullaballoo about low pay. If you don't agree that you want to fly for that pay, don't. Easy peasy.
JD345
JD345 1
The old "I can't believe they pay me this much to do this" vs. "They couldn't pay me enough to do this" situation. There are two variables -- the pay, and the work. Jobs generally will pay the minimum amount someone who WANTS the job is willing to take. If you don't WANT to do your job, you'll never, ever have a big enough paycheck, but if you WANT to do it, it'll feel like highway robbery every payday.
didi216
I love all these Experts on F/A's. "I pay Them!" What a Crock. Anyone who flies a Commercial Flight need to be educated on FAA procedures. The FAA makes the rules. The Airline has to follow them. The Flight Crew owes you nothing but Safety. Pilots have Thousands of hours of training. F/A Have Extensive Training to save your Poor Ass. But all they get is Grief from POS passengers.

Here is an Idea. Fly International and act like a Retard. Then you will get a Free Room and Board at the Local Jail. They love unruly passengers in foreign countries.

No, I don't work for a airline. I do work at a Wholesale Club. People think that you owe them something. I see this Crap every day. To anyone who says "If you don't like your Job. Quit" Grow Up and Act like a Human, not like you were raised by a pack of Badgers. Walk a Mile in our shoes! You just sitting on you behind in the aircraft.

Do you know if you Talk civil to the F/A they will treat you Nicely. Act like a Jackass you will be treated like one.

Don't get me wrong I have dealt with a F/A who was a Jerk. I called the Corporate Office. The F/A was Suspended for treating passengers poorly. I was reimbursed my Fare.

FYI: I have friends and family that work/worked (retired) for a airline.

There are a lot of obnoxious SOBs out there but that's life. Complaining about it when you're in the break room is fine, but the problem is when customer service folks take that mentality on the job with them. You have to be able forget the fat moronic F-head from 15 seconds ago and deal with the next person in line. If your attitude is do unto others the way they just did unto you, get out of the customer service field and fast.
didi216
JD345 What do you do for a Living? This man Lost It! But when you are facing 30- 300 people all at once acting like the world owes them everything. What else are F/A suppose to do? The F/A's Can not change the orders for Ground/Tower Control.

I've seen male flight attendants being called Fags, Homos, Princess. I seen the anger on their face. What are they suppose to do??? I know that they feel like Splitting the Fool Head open. But they will not go that far. All they can to is ignore these Jackwagons.

Any career working with the public is Stressful. Look at Police. These people do this job because they Love it. But you see these Police Officer get abused all the Time. Cashiers at Retail Store get abused. Nurses and Doctors get abused. Well we don't do it for the Money. We do it because we love to work with the public.

Here is a FYI. It only takes one fool to start a Wild Fire.

When in the Hell did this become a world of Entitlement. I wonder if these people do this to Wait Staff when they Dine Out. Who know what they will get in there food?

From what I can tell you are part of the Problem, Not the Solution.

Karma is a Beautiful thing. Thing will come back and Bite these Wild Bunch of Badgers in the A**.

Michael - I don't believe anyone that's posted so far believes the pax acted appropriately. However, when you accept a service oriented job you roll the dice. Sometimes you work a flight and everyone is perfectly wonderful, polite and friendly. But then, enter the real world - sometimes you work a flight and a few people aren't happy, their day isn't going well, and they take it out on the person most convenient. Sometimes it's the F/A. F/As are trained to handle difficult pax and when they don't do as trained, they aren't dong their job. Everyone at one time or another has had to bite the bullet, swallow their pride and walk away from a difficult situation. If I were to treat a client the way this particular F/A treated the airline's paying customers, I'd be out of work. It's just the way life works. Climb on down off that high horse of yours and join the rest of us. It's not so bad. It just takes some realism.

So when you're preaching how their behavior was inappropriate, I suggest you look to yourself. And I say that to you in the nicest possible way.

Customers did not deserve this. Period! There are ways to communicate with others, this is not one of them. And I might add, it was poor management of the flight, allowing them to leave the gate with a questionable amount of fuel, knowing the congestion at the terminal.

You ended up with what we saw, an angry bunch of passengers, and tainted impression of the product.

Unfortunately the system is strained when any little issue comes up like weather or bad scheduling plus summer travel loads. The problem is when these incidents happen the airlines don't give a flying rats as% about the customer. It's a greyhound in the sky now like the guy below said you get what you pay for. Flying in the US airspace system just SUX. I fly late at night and get a few beers in me before I depart peak flying times are chaos now.
cmarckwardt
The first alert that something might be askew regarding this incident is that it was prsented on Breitbart.com. Those are the same folk that ambushed Planned Parentood and thrive thrive on taking stuff out of context and pressing questionable conclusions. I fly commercial as a passenger on average a round trip per week. What I can't believe is how rarely flight attendants reach critical mass with the flying public.

A diagnosis of Emphysema is always preceded by and accompanied a chest x ray. Your doctor knows that and the specialist should have been presented with the x rays and and a summery report.
