displaced thresholds mean nothing in that part of the world huh?....lol.......great video....crazy approach
tnano

Here in Canada it is permissible to land on a displaced threshold, it simply is displaced due to obstacle clearance requirements for the approach not meeting the criteria for that runway. Not sure what the rules are down there but I'd probably do the same thing for a shortish runway in those conditions if I believed the surface was safe to land on.

Just proves he was lower than he needed to be on the approach

If you get a chance, pull up the runway info for that airport. You may find an approval for the displaced threshold landing With all these experts who have never been there they may learn something.

So in Canada there are no displaced thresholds due to the runway not able to sustain the continuous impact from landing aircraft?
preacher1
preacher1 2
That's kinda what I was wondering. It's one thing for a taxi and pull across; it's quite another taking 300,000+lbs at 130-150 kts out of the sky. If they can withstand that impact, why have them displaced in the first place.

And he had plenty of runway too. There was no reason for him to land so early.

Including the displaced threshold, it's only 4000 feet long at an elevation of 4000'. Additionally it's hot, so I would probably make the same type of approach myself, although I would try to stay on a 3° glide path. Nothing more embarrassing than going off the end of a runway when you left 1500' feet behind you.

Not as dramatic as this approach!!! However the approach into Cusco, Peru (CUZ / SPZO)is another cool one. Cusco is in a valley at around 11,000ft above sea level. SPZO is also serviced by several airlines which include LAN, TACA, Star Peru, and LC Peru.

I can tell you from personal experience coming in on one LAN's A319's is something to remember!!!

Well, if you're not landing, and you're that low, it SHOULD be calling you a retard lol.

I wonder what the IFR profile would be...Proceed direct to runway threshold using emergency descent rate. When stars disappear from sight, break left, break right, place head between knees and kiss your arse goodbye!
Absolutely AMAZING flying! I loved it!

I think if I had to, I'd want to learn that approach from the guy who was in the left seat, and then never do it again. Makes ASE look like a piece of cake! Talk about your basic OEI nightmare!

Whats the big deal, it looked smooth to me, put yourself in a OH 58 with hundreds of rounds of 7.62 coming up at you and you have a real pucker factor
dbartel

Ya, I thought the same about the displaced threshold touchdown but then noticed the limp sock just prior to the end of the video, no head wind, an approximate elevation of 4,000'+ MSL and likely a bit warmer than standard temp. I think I would have done the same given all the details.

Probably should close the curtains to the cockpit just before entering the canyon. I doubt that the passengers need to see this...

I'm puzzled how the wind can be calm enough to get that close to the rocks. You'd think there would be turbulence and downdrafts in that kind of terrain?

As for me just being a Flight Sim pilot (Not the best at that.) That to me looks like not the easiest place to fly into. You Pros can do that in your sleep. dodger4, seems to kn ow what he is talking about. Hats off to all of you REAL 100% CPL's. You have hard jobs. You never get paid what you are worth. except Delta United etc pilots do. but the rest don't I feel..
smoki

Good thing there was no sea wall or he would have hit it much like the boyz from Korea. Aim point was obviously the very end of the runway rather than on or beyond the displaced threshold which was no doubt put there to prevent a low and flat approach like the one made.

You know, the heck of it is, those guys grow up and live in that part of the world and thinking that to be normal.LOL

That just looks like it rolls off into a country hiway. It didn't look like displaced threshold was anywhere close to the top of his thinking list.LOL
preacher1
preacher1 1
Well,, a Charley Approach, call the board, right turn Clyde, at the old KaiTak in a 707 and later a 757 was enough pucker for me. You guys can have this one and haggle it out. I can see quite a bit more challenge here with some wind and a little fog, but it does look a little on the tame side as is. I'm kinda like Chris though about that FO and his camera. You got to be on your game but ain't we supposed to be when we are up there on the pointey end. LOL G'Nite All.

I agree Preacher1. For me it was Kai Tak in a DC-10-30, tail end of a typhoon and more than a "pucker approach". When you made your "Checkerboard Turn"...it was time to bring out the "Biz Bag".
WALLACE24
WALLACE24 1
I think it's there to use if its rated for your plane. He didn't appear to be teetering on a stall either! Wasn't his first rodeo there.
joelwiley

I thought so too, but an overhead shot shows it's just a turnaround. Seems to be the only asphalt in the valley. Lord only knows how the got it in.

You know, it is still there. We could go back and do it again. NOT.LOL Our 767 is headed back over there next week. I'm not going. They will be bouncing into the new one. None of us have ever been in there. PF and Director of Flt Ops now was my right seat the last time we in there in the old one.lol
preacher1
preacher1 1
You really couldn't tell any difference between it and the runway as you can on some, and you are correct, it was not his first rodeo. It looked like he was out for a Sunday afternoon drive. LOL

Dee Lowry 1
They can't seem to figure out what to do with the old place. The only new addition is a Cruise Ship Terminal at the tip of Rwy 13. So, so sad. The thrill is gone. Kind of miss waving to everybody!
Moviela
Ric Wernicke 1
Kai Tak is done. The runway has been carved up in several places. When I drive by now it seems like it was easier than it was. Time makes you forget. It was the most pucker I ever had on my first solo landing there. I was so tight I could have picked up a dime off a sheet of glass.
Doobs
Dee Lowry 1
Talk about a visual. Awesome, Ric. Proud of ya. lol
preacher1
preacher1 1
I didn't know it had been carved up. I was looking at the same story everybody else was about the cruise line terminal. I can relate to what Dee was talking about the biz bag. 9 times out of 10, when you made that right turn, you had to correct and set up for a crab, and just pray. If you weren't a religious man before, you were afterwards when you got down. lol. That was as close to a stabilized approach as you'd get.lol. That was all hand flying. I wonder how all today's button pushers and systems monitors would fare in there.

My question is: why is the right seat shooting video instead of doing his job? This is the kind of thing that's getting pilots and controllers fired.
StymieHo
Chris Donawho 1
Fairly straight-in approach, with a slight lazy left at the end. To hell with the mountains..... I see myself walking up to the F/O after the flight and shoving that video camera so far up his ass, you can't pipe daylight to it! Sure the Capt. is flying, but F/O's need to do their job too. Documenting one's own demise is not in the cards for me.
THRUSTT
THRUSTT 3
He's probably not required to be there, just riding along. It is a single pilot airplane...
StymieHo
Chris Donawho 1
I had the same question John... although I used more colorful metaphors...lol

No one else seems to mind it though... In fact, preacher1 posted here from the cockpit of a Mad Dog (hope you didnt think I would forget that Wayne...lol). At least he was 30,000+ over Shreveport, instead of in the approach phase, which is when the cockpit is "supposedly" sterile.

Getting close to Saturday night in Texas. You have got your fresh bottle of Crown open and getting warmed up ain't ya?
preacher1
preacher1 1
Your memory is that of an elephant but so is mine; right seat was PF on the way back on that trip and I made that post not long before we started talking to DFW approach. Best I also remember, that was the Saturday for they filed BR the following Monday and my last reserve flight for them.
StymieHo
Chris Donawho 1
Well, that would've been a good time to stop flying reserve for them... Unless you like getting paid pennies on the dollar.
