A Lockheed P-38 "Lightning" for those who appreciate but don't live and breathe this stuff.
Believe the Nazis called this the "split-tail devil."

15 years ago, while staying with relatives at Desert Hot Springs, watched a P-38 across the valley doing touch and goes at the Palm Springs airport. Thrilling!!! The sound was incredible.

Believe it was referred to as the "forked tail devil" by the Jap pilots.

Bart, that name was given to the P-38 by German pilots... "der Gabelschwanz Teufel" - "The Forked-Tailed Devil". The Japanese pilots had a different name for it.
